Written Adéle Lombaard – founder of The Dogbox Project

Are you doing something special for your 67 minutes on Mandela Day this year? If not, we at The Dogbox Project still have open kennels available at our Mandela Day event. Young and old are welcome, so bring the entire family.

The Dogbox Project, in partnership with Boss Dog Food, will be hosting our next event in honour of Mandela Day on Saturday, 15 July and Sunday, 16 July from 10:00 – 12:00 at Tyger Valley Centre in Bellville, Cape Town. This year we will be hosting our biggest event with 150 kennels over two days. So don’t miss out!

You will have the privilege of donating “your” completed kennel to the shelter of your choice. The shelter will receive the kennel with a blanket and food to distribute to less fortunate pet owners.

ENTRY FEE – R160.00 per team. Each team consists of two people – friends, family, colleagues – and the teams have 67 minutes to put the finishing touches to the kennel they have sponsored. Once done, the animal welfares will collect the kennels for distribution. (If you can assist with this for your chosen animal welfare, please do let them know.)

What is The Dogbox Project?

The Dogbox Project started in 2012 as a Mandela Day initiative. The idea was to get teams of two to sponsor a ready-made kennel for a needy dog in a shelter or township. The team would then have the fun task of decorating the kennel within 67 minutes and selecting an animal welfare of their choice to donate it to. The organisation would then donate the kennel to a dog in need of shelter.

The need of animal welfares is growing by the day – blankets, food and kennels are always needed. Of these three items, kennels are the most expensive and, as funds are limited, shelters aren’t always able to purchase them. In townships, most dogs live outside all the time so a kennel is an important item. In animal shelters, dogs awaiting homes also need a kennel in which to be cosy.

That’s why we decided to help.

With your assistance and participation, we have changed the lives of many dogs that will now be warm and dry in winter, and cool and shaded in the hot summer. And there are many more out there, so help us to help them and spend your 67 minutes doing something great.
