We were looking for a dog – a very special dog – and who we found was truly extraordinary…

A glimmer of hope

We decided to visit the SPCA Louis Trichardt on a Saturday morning after wanting to go for months. Unfortunately, due to work and Marli’s anxiety not always allowing us to go somewhere, we couldn’t go prior to that day.

Marli is autistic, level 3 and non-verbal. She was diagnosed two weeks prior to her second birthday.

Marli was never interested in animals, not really. She’d briefly pet the cats at the centre she attends, but beyond that, animals were overwhelming for her – both emotionally and sensory wise. She got used to the cats and later was quite fond of them. She started petting dogs as well and there was a glimmer of hope in our hearts that she’d perhaps accept a dog into our family.

We’d been hoping that Marli could find a companion who’d connect with her in a meaningful way and for her to not be all by herself, as she’s our only child and prefers keeping herself busy rather than socialising with others. What we didn’t know was that our visit that specific day would change our lives forever.

Old souls reunited

At the SPCA, we explained that we were looking for a dog that could accommodate Marli’s needs and her personality. We were referred to four dogs. Among the kennels sat Cody (then called Baloo), a gentle dog with a calm presence that stood out instantly.

He wasn’t barking or pacing. He simply watched, quietly and attentively with a wagging tail, as Marli approached. What happened next felt less like a first meeting and more like the reuniting of old souls.

Marli instantly connected with Cody in a way that left us speechless. She walked towards him without hesitation. Cody moved closer. No words were spoken, yet a whole conversation seemed to pass between them. Marli reached out; Cody lowered his head and from that moment, they were bonded.

We went through the adoption process with the SPCA. Unfortunately, Cody fell ill and had tick fever. But we took him home and gave him his pills daily (in grated cheese, of course). He got stronger every day and soon enough he was well, adjusted and part of the family. Our neighbours and the children in the complex that we stay in fell in love with him.

Cody brings calm

Communication for Marli has always been unique, expressed through subtle gestures instead of spoken words. Cody understood this immediately. He didn’t look for verbal cues or commands. Instead, he felt her emotions, matched her pace, and quietly adjusted to her world.

Within days, they fell into their own rhythm. If Marli wandered to her quiet space, Cody followed and settled beside her. When she needed comfort, he was there. When she stims or feels overwhelmed, he watches over her with patient calm. They have a silent language – built not with words, but with trust.

The world can be overwhelming for Marli, but Cody brings her a sense of safety and consistency. We quickly noticed what only a true bond can create.

Cody, once a dog without a home, discovered his purpose in Marli and Marli gained a best friend.

Bond of a lifetime

What began as a simple visit to the SPCA has blossomed into an extraordinary friendship. Today, Marli and Cody are inseparable. They move through life side by side, an unspoken promise passing between them every day: I understand you.

Together, they show the world that connection doesn’t need words. It needs heart, patience, and the courage to see someone for who they truly are. Their story is a beautiful reminder of the life-changing magic that happens when animals meet the people they were meant for and how the quietest friendships often speak the loudest of all.

What makes Cody even more special is how he has woven himself into each member of our family in his own unique way. With me (mom), Cody shares a heart-warming kitchen partnership. He’s my loyal sidekick while I cook, always keeping me company, his head on my feet the moment I stand still. And when night falls, Cody insists on sleeping next to me. With (dad), Donny, Cody becomes a certified couch-potato companion. They share easy, comfortable evenings stretched out on the couch, the two of them relaxing like long-time buddies.

With Marli, well, he’s her personal vacuum cleaner, following her everywhere, making sure not a crumb escapes his attention. But more than that, he’s her shadow and her guard. Cody plays with Marli in her sandpit, patiently letting her cover him with sand and happily climbing into the jolly trolley with her. He even waits outside the bathroom door while she bathes, keeping watch until she’s done. He’s gentle, loyal, and truly her best friend. Cody and Marli share a bond that’s as sweet as it is unbreakable. Since bonding with Cody, Marli has slowly opened up to a whole new world. She now even enjoys horse rides. We truly believe Cody helped desensitise her and guided her towards loving and feeling comfortable around more animals. Their friendship has not only brought joy but has also helped her grow in ways we never imagined.

Cody has become so much more than a pet. He’s Cody Pennells, a true member of the family. He arrived at just the right time, in just the right way, to us, who needed him most.

He’s brought comfort, laughter, belonging, and a kind of understanding that no one can teach, only love can create. He’s truly loved, deeply appreciated, and we’re so thankful for him.

Cody wasn’t just adopted; he was meant to be with us.
