Friends of Ferals, an organisation dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating cats, is raising funds through the sale of unique mugs and necklaces (previously highlighted in July). All proceeds will go directly towards paying off our vet bills, which have been increasing due to the large number of special needs cases at our shelter.

The glass is imported from France and fired at 740°C. After 24 hours, once the pendants have cooled, they are further prepared with a diamond-tipped grinder and a diamond-tipped drill. Cat Care has put together an attractive calendar each year since 2012. This calendar has evolved over the years from an A3 strip with only one photo, to what is it now, a glorious spectacle of beautiful cats and kittens.
For the past three years, we’ve run a competition and invited our supporters to submit photos of their cats, along with a small fee. Photos for the calendar are selected from those entries and the funds raised through that and the sale of the calendar all go towards sterilising and maintaining feral colonies in Nelson Mandela Metropole and surrounding areas. This includes feeding and providing veterinary attention when necessary. We also take in kittens from feral colonies, tame them, and find good, approved homes for them.

After the success of their gorgeous 2021 Art Calendar, 12 of South Africa’s leading contemporary artists have once again contributed towards a calendar for Do It For The Dogs, a charity initiative that raises funds for animals in need.
Do It For the Dogs is a passion project started by Tracey Burke, an ex-Cape Town advertising professional and ardent animal rights supporter. The project has evolved from a charity drive selling pre-loved clothes at pop-up second-hand clothes markets in Cape Town to an Instagram account and Facebook page, raising over R800k for animals in the last three years.
All funds raised have been donated to animal welfare organisations that have struggled through the Covid-19-affected years and a lack of funding in general. The aim in 2023 is to get even more dogs sterilised, adopted, homed, loved or cared for.
“My favourite type of dog is a rescue,” says Tracey, “I love them all. And while I know that I can’t save every abandoned or neglected mutt out there, I know that I have to do everything I can to try. Do It For The Dogs was started to raise money for our hard-working, underfunded animal welfare organisations that already do so much. They do incredible work and need all the help they can get.”
The A5 desk calendar will feature works by Paul du Toit, David Kuijers, Sarah Pratt, John Pace, Xee Summer, Kirsten Sims, Zinthle Sithebe, Pigcasso, Jade Klara, Renee Rossouw, Olivie Keck and Frank van Reenen.

reTail is a small new company started by animal rescuer and behaviourist Brenda Snyman, Registered Veterinary Physiotherapist Sarah Oxley, and devoted rat owner Camilla Crewe. They’re passionate about exotic pets in particular, but their Veterinary Record Books include cats and dogs.
The aim of these books is to provide pet owners with the ability to keep track of the veterinary care of their animals. The books are pocket-sized (A6) and durable. They include information on the owners, preferred vet, vet physio and emergency contacts, pet details (e.g. name, sex, markings, personality, etc.), space for mementos (e.g. a footprint and a photo), weight chart, surgery log, parasite treatment schedule, grooming appointments, etc. The dog and cat books also include vaccination logs and a certificate of sterilisation page for vets to fill in and stamp. All the books have many pages to log information about vet visits, including date, symptoms, treatment given/needed, etc. and, lastly, a small section for any additional notes the owner may want to add.

On the 24th of January 2022, a life-sized bronze statue of a very special dog named Humphrey with a plaque and donation details, created by KwaZulu-Natal artist and sculptor Sarah Richards, was unveiled at its permanent site near the Cabana Beach Resort on the Umhlanga Promenade (read the story).
Humphrey, adopted from the SPCA by Umhlanga resident Alwyn Immerman, is a rescued dog who turned out to be a fundraiser par excellence, raising over R1 million for the Durban and Coast SPCA (read the story). Humphrey can now add another title: honoured!
The bronze 56 x 45 x 58cm statue, weighing approximately 46kg, is the product of many hours of meticulous planning, behind-the-scenes work, the creative talent of sculptor Sarah Richards, and an obliging and patient Humphrey who modelled tirelessly.
You can also support the SPCA Durban by purchasing a Humphrey maquette – an adorable mini version of the full-sized Humphrey statue. Cast in bronze, it’s approximately 15cm high and will be a real talking point in any animal lover’s home or garden.
