Some souls don’t ask to be chosen… they quietly hope someone will see them.
Kuta was that puppy – small, unsure, and watching the world from the back of a rescue centre. Not the loudest. Not the boldest. Just waiting. And then, in one fragile, beautiful moment, he chose trust.
A cautious step forward – and a gentle climb into the arms that would become his forever.
What followed is a journey of patience, healing, and a love that grew stronger with every fear overcome. From a timid little heart to a devoted, affectionate companion, Kuta’s story is a reminder that sometimes the quietest dogs have the loudest love to give.
And just when you think you know him, there’s a hidden story in his DNA waiting to surprise you.
Keep reading to meet Kuta – the shy boy who turned one brave moment into a lifetime of love.

The first time we saw Kuta, who was known as Boomer at the centre, he was a three-and-a-half-month-old puppy tucked away at the back of the cages at Kitty and Puppy Haven, a rescue centre in Johannesburg. He was the quiet, shy puppy, watching from a distance while the others clamoured for attention. We were given the opportunity to meet him one-on-one in a separate area to bond before making our decision. Kuta sat completely still, frightened, for several minutes before cautiously approaching us for a treat. Moments later, he climbed into our laps for protection. In that instant, we knew he’d trusted us, and we knew we’d be able to give him the best life possible.
After bringing him home, it quickly became clear that Kuta was a very unique-looking dog with a beautiful personality. This curiosity led us to get his DNA tested through MuttMix, eager to understand what breeds make him who he is. We now live in Ballito, where he enjoys an active, outdoor lifestyle, and learning about his breed mix has helped us better understand both his appearance and his behaviour.
Upon receiving the results, we were both surprised and fascinated.
Kuta’s MuttMix Results:
27% German Shepherd Dog
15% Dobermann Pinscher
11% Rottweiler
11% Bearded Collie
9% Miniature Long-Haired Dachshund
9% Cardigan Welsh Corgi
9% Border Collie
9% Belgian Malinois
German Shepherd makes up the largest percentage of Kuta’s breed composition, and with this insight, we can now clearly recognise its influence in his movement and floppy ears. Since then, several people have remarked in passing that he strongly resembles a German Shepherd, despite having no knowledge of his breed mix. It seems they noticed something we did not at first.
Dobermann is his second-largest breed composition, and it’s one of the few breeds we correctly guessed before receiving the results. His face closely resembles that of brown Dobermanns, with a light brown nose and lighter-coloured eyes. He’s also exceptionally affectionate and loves lying on top of you on the couch. Despite him being an extremely clever dog, his regular scatter-brained moments and his fear of anything unfamiliar are recognisable traits often associated with this breed.
Some of the lower-percentage breeds in Kuta’s composition stand out quite noticeably. His Border Collie heritage, in particular, is evident in both his appearance and behaviour. When playing with other dogs, Kuta often lies flat with his head pressed to the ground, stalking them in the same way Border Collies do when herding. He can also enter a trance-like state during play, a reflection of the breed’s well-known intense focus.
The Long-Haired Dachshund influence is most obvious in his impressively long body. Despite the size associated with some of his breeds, he remains relatively small, and we hope this gene will help keep him a comfortable medium size.
One of the most impressive aspects of Kuta’s breed composition is his Belgian Malinois percentage. He has exceptionally strong sniffing abilities and is able to track one of his humans across roads, beaches, and grassy areas with remarkable accuracy. This natural skill is something we intend to enhance and develop through training over time. He also possesses impressive speed, which further reflects the athleticism associated with this breed.
Kuta is, in fact, highly intelligent and learns new things with ease. Because of his sensitivity, he’s uncertain about many things and instinctively runs to your feet for reassurance. Motorbikes are his greatest fear, but with patience and gentle exposure he’s gradually become more comfortable around them.
Despite his anxieties, Kuta is the friendliest dog you could meet. He adores other dogs and seems to believe every human is his best friend. He’s never growled, bitten, or shown dominance towards another dog. He’s always submissive in interactions and is especially gentle with children and babies.
His happiest moments are spent running freely on the beach. Although not quite brave enough yet for the waves, he’ll happily explore tidal pools and is slowly building his confidence. He’s also developed a love for toys. In the beginning, he’d only play with sticks or rope. Today, his favourite toy is a silicone Frisbee, and he’s still perfecting his ability to catch it mid-air.
Kuta’s favourite treat is a frozen carrot, and the moment he hears the freezer open, he’s instantly by your side. He’s a fussy eater, so we’re still learning which foods he truly enjoys.
From the shy puppy known as Boomer at a rescue centre in Johannesburg to a beach-loving companion in Ballito, Kuta’s journey has been as unique as his DNA. Discovering his breed mix has only deepened our appreciation for the gentle, trusting dog he is and the life he was always meant to have.
