Since December 2008, Pug Rescue South Africa has rescued close to 2,800 mostly Pugs, providing first-class care and shelter. We say mostly Pugs as around 15% of our rescues are what we refer to as Honorary Pugs (non-Pugs), which have ranged from Africanis to Bulldogs to Chihuahuas and even five cats.

On any given day, Pug Rescue SA can care for up to 220 rescues. We rescue Pugs throughout South Africa, albeit that our sanctuary is in Benoni. Many of our rescues are aged and have health challenges; for these special Pugs, we offer a retirement section where their every need is catered to.

Paws working together

The challenges facing animal welfare in South Africa are immense. Shelters are overwhelmed, and many are forced to make impossible decisions, including euthanasia, closure and not being able to accommodate more animals due to sheer numbers and lack of resources.

Cheryl Gaw, the co-founder of Pug Rescue SA, together with Ancois van Zyl from The Paw Company, had an audience with the portfolio committee of the Department of Agriculture in June this year where they presented the State of Companion Animal Welfare in South Africa and appealed for regulation regarding breeding. Much of animal welfare is treating the symptoms and not the cause – irresponsible breeding and selling.

The Thanda Inja Project

Among PRSA’s initiatives is the Thanda Inja Project, which has been operating in Daveyton for the past 12 years. This project brings veterinary care, vaccinations, sterilisation, and education directly to a community in need twice a month. Its mission is simple: to reduce overpopulation, prevent suffering, and improve the lives of both dogs and their owners.

The Thanda Inja Project also runs three sterilisation campaigns a year for low-income earners offering low-cost subsidised sterilisations.

The Thanda Inja Project is a true partnership with Pug Rescue SA, our State Vet and private veterinarians. The project makes a measurable difference, from spaying and neutering hundreds of dogs and cats, to providing medical care for animals who’d ordinarily have no access to veterinary care.

Running such extensive programmes requires resources, and Pug Rescue SA has developed creative ways to fund our work. Apart from numerous fundraisers each month, initiatives like Grumpy Pug Wines not only raise money but also raise awareness, allowing supporters to enjoy a glass of wine while contributing to a cause – sip for a purpose. Every fundraiser, every donation, ensures our sustainability, and that the food room is stocked and the vet bills are paid.

Creating chances for animals

At the heart of Pug Rescue SA’s work is a simple truth: every animal deserves a chance. From a senior Pug abandoned in a cardboard box to puppies surrendered because owners can’t cope or afford the veterinary bills, Pug Rescue SA sees the value in every life.

Our dedication hasn’t only saved thousands of dogs and cats but has inspired countless people to act, volunteer, and support animal welfare.

Whether you adopt, donate, volunteer, or simply share our story, supporting Pug Rescue SA means saving lives and shaping a more compassionate future. After all, every rescued Pug is more than a dog, it’s a story of survival, love, and hope.
