Training the dog is training the human being

Kiki Capers... by Kiki D

So today puppy school was cancelled due to the rain, M&D seemed happy about that, momentarily... but I still needed some energy draining so I dragged (almost not only proverbially...) them out for a lovely long walk. It did the trick and afterwards I got cosy in my bed and snoozed nicely.

Later BBA (Big Boy Aaron) came downstairs and we had a great training session that included “sit” (I am VERY good at that), “down” (that one still confuses me a bit), “stay” (ticked), “fetch” (I definitely love that one as I race off like a hoolie bazoolie after a ball), and “bring back” (not so keen on that one).

And then... I impressed mom with the most perfect poop I have had since she brought me home! Yay!... The fact that it was found in the spare room on the carpet marred her happiness somewhat! But honestly I really wanted her to see it, rain free and all... and it was that perfect that mom was able to singlehandedly pick it up without leaving any residue on the lovely cream carpet – how good am I?! I also foxed mom and Aaron as they have NO idea when I did it... I had been playing with them... but maybe they didn’t notice one detour “to drop a load”. Clearly the vet tummy food and the veggies to bind my tummy are working – yay for me!

Mom and Teacher Sandy had a lovely chat on the phone and Teacher Sandy says I need a dog friend... a dog to play and interact with... (mom initially thought TS meant to adopt another and I visibly saw mom slump a bit... she is just about managing my enthusiasm for life) but TS meant another owned dog. So M&D are going to round up a friend or two for me. Oh fun... although I am rather nervous too.

Giggle Teacher Sandy mentioned to mom “you come across as an anxious person”... no kidding... poor mom, after 4 weeks of my dicky tummy, not one full night’s sleep since my arrival, and my moments of crazy assed puppy antics (apparently my excited barking at M&D to get them to focus on me is NO longer allowed - drat) will do that to one! Mind in my defense, mom was predisposed to a good dollop of angst to start with – let’s put it down the last 5 years of tending to old and ailing fur kids! Take a chill pill mom!

I know that mom was pretty keen for a nice calm adult Maltese (luckily Dad and Aaron opted for a cute puppy) and I AM going to be the best dog ever! Teacher Sandy says I am very bright and need “a job”. My job will be to listen and learn, be sociable and TS also gave mom a few great tips on how to keep me calm, happy and treated (yahoo) around the scaredy cats. Lessons begin as soon as the next kitty needs a wee break or a nibble! Watch this space!

Seems like we all need some training and although life in our cottage might be a bit topsy turvy what with us all learning the right way with each other... “this too shall pass” mom says, hopefully!
