Two years ago, my partner, Kaidan, and I decided to visit the Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) in Epping on their adoption day. We went to drop off some dog food and play with the puppies. But, as we walked past the kitten section, we immediately fell in love with a tiny black kitten named Midnight.

We sat in her cage, playing with the tiniest ball of fur – Midnight. She jumped all over us, and her little meow stole our hearts. We later learned that Midnight and her brother had been found in a bush and handed over to the AACL. After spending hours with her, we decided to adopt her. We filled in the forms, were approved, and unknowingly set in motion a day that would change our lives forever.

Midnight, now known as Midnights Vogue, had to stay at the shelter a little longer than her brother, as she was struggling to pick up weight. Three weeks after our approval, we finally received the call: we could bring her home.

Vogue came home a confident little kitten, immediately settling in with her German Shepherd dog best friends. Her full name, Midnights Vogue, reflects her past – something that remains a meaningful part of her story.

Determined to give her a full and adventurous life, we searched the internet for kitten socialisation classes, hoping to raise her as one might a puppy. But finding nothing, we began taking her on walks in the backyard, slowly getting her used to a harness. To our delight, she took to it with confidence and joy.

Eventually, we introduced her to markets and restaurants around Cape Town – and again, she amazed us with her fearless and friendly nature. Her best friend is Mclaren, a massive German Shepherd who checks up on her every time someone picks her up, making sure she’s safe.

Vogue even supports local animal charities by attending events like Paws on the Promenade, Woefie Wandel, the Asics Best Friend Dog Walk, and more! One of our favourites is the monthly Paws-A-While Market on the Sea Point promenade, which gives animal organisations a platform to showcase adoptable cats and dogs. Vogue has even participated in the Paws-A-While rescue dog show – and came third!

We travel all over Cape Town trying and reviewing pet-friendly places, which we share on our Instagram page: @the_dog_cat_adventures.

Vogue and her doggy friends have become local Instagram sensations, loved across Cape Town for their kind temperaments and adventurous spirits. Vogue, in particular, shows just how special black cats can be. Sadly, black cats are often overlooked due to outdated superstitions. But Vogue breaks this stigma every day – she’s nothing but delightful, confident, and utterly beautiful.
