I have a long history of helping dogs in need. Over the years, I’ve been a “foster-fail” for many dogs, which means I ended up adopting them because I couldn’t bear to let them go. By 2012, I had twelve Pekingese dogs in my household. But as time went on, I found myself with just three by the end of 2024. After being diagnosed with breast cancer, I decided to focus on my health and make it easier for my husband and I to travel together for his work. So, I stopped adopting dogs for a while.

He was still waiting

In April this year, my friend Dee Ivings of Happy Tails sent me a WhatsApp message about a Pekingese named James, who had no eyes and was up for adoption through the Maltese, French Poodle, and Yorkie Rescue of South Africa (MFPYR SA). Despite my initial response that I wasn’t adopting any more dogs, Dee kept sending me updates.

Every week for four weeks, she reminded me that James was still waiting for a home. I didn’t even mention this to my husband, as I knew he’d encourage me to adopt James. But deep down, I knew I was one of the few people who had the experience and time to care for a special needs dog like James.

Finally, after much thought, I contacted Dee, who put me in touch with Alda During, Founder of MFPYR SA, who was fostering James at her home. We agreed to meet so my husband and I could meet James in person. His background is unknown other than finding him as a stray with a damaged eye that couldn’t be saved. Sadly, while in foster care, he somehow damaged his remaining eye. Despite the veterinarian’s best efforts, he couldn’t save it.

When we finally saw him, it was love at first sight. We took him home the very same day.

How James began to trust

At first, James was nervous and anxious in his new environment. Because he had no sight, everything was new and overwhelming for him. He had separation anxiety and needed to always be with me. For the first few days, I carried him around with me everywhere I went. He’d walk in tight circles, confused and unsure of his new surroundings. At mealtimes, he’d bark and wail, unable to settle down. It was exhausting, and at times, I wondered if I’d made the right decision. This was definitely more work than I’d expected.

But I was determined to help James feel safe and loved in his new home. I applied the techniques from dog trainer Cesar Milan that I’d used successfully with other dogs – discipline, exercise, and affection. It wasn’t easy, but over time, James started to calm down. Slowly, he began to trust me.

It took about two weeks for us to reach a place of calmness, and gradually, James learned that he didn’t need to cry or bark to get attention. Patience was key.

Now, after almost eight weeks with us, James has settled in nicely. He no longer whines or barks during mealtimes, and he gets along well with our other three Pekingese dogs. He’s confident when navigating our house and garden, using his nose to guide him around. He may not have eyes, but he certainly doesn’t let that hold him back. James is a little character – a real clown who loves to make us laugh.

Small dog, big heart

While the other Pekingese dogs race around the garden, James prefers to play indoors. We have our special game of “find the treat”, where I hide small treats around the house, and James uses his keen sense of smell to find them. It’s become one of our favourite activities, and it helps to keep him mentally stimulated.

Adopting James has been an incredibly rewarding experience. We’ve learned so much from each other, and although we still have more to learn, I’m committed to giving him the best life possible. He may not have eyes, but he has a big heart and a loving family who’ll care for him as he grows older.

We’ll continue to follow the principles of discipline, exercise, and affection to ensure he’s happy and healthy. James is part of our family now, and we’re looking forward to many more years together, watching him grow and thrive.
