In the heart of Brits, a small town in the North-West province, an all-too-familiar tragedy was quietly unfolding. A Persian cat, elegant but visibly distressed, was spotted alone in an empty yard. She was doing her best to care for a litter of tiny kittens, despite being thin, weak, and utterly abandoned. By the time the call for help reached us, it was already too late for some of her babies. Only a few had survived, and they were rushed into foster care.
But we couldn’t stop there. The mother herself – traumatised, grieving, and still out there – needed saving too.
The following Monday, Harties Feral Cat Rescue’s Joanne Kontaxopoulos-Rabe set off to Brits with a trap in hand, prepared to rescue what she assumed would be a terrified and feral cat. What she found instead was something far more heartbreaking.
This cat wasn’t feral at all.
She greeted Joanne with the silent, aching trust of an animal who’d once known comfort – and had it ripped away. A little digging revealed the painful truth: her previous owners had moved house and simply left her behind. Pregnant. Alone. Left to give birth in a vacant yard with no food, no shelter, and no one coming back.
We named her Katie. Because no one, least of all a loyal, loving soul like her, deserves to be forgotten.
Katie’s past is full of sorrow we can’t undo. But her future? That’s something we can rewrite. After being safely taken in by Elsabe at Uitkomst Sanctuary, a lovely couple saw her photo on our group and instantly fell in love. They decided to give her the forever home she deserved.
Here’s what they shared with us:
“We first saw Katie’s photo on the Harties Feral Cat Rescue Facebook page and instantly fell in love – her sweet face captured our hearts. When we collected her from Elsabe, we were both excited and a little nervous about how she’d fit in with our other three adopted cats.
“At first, it was like walking on hot coals – some hissing, curious glances, and cautious approaches. But with a little time and patience, things settled beautifully, and soon they all accepted her as part of the family.
“Katie has the most wonderful personality. She’s affectionate, playful, and loves being the centre of attention. Whether it’s cuddles, pampering, or just being nearby while we go about our day, she’s always up for it. It’s been a joy watching her blossom and bond with both us and the other cats.
“Adopting Katie was, without a doubt, one of the best decisions we’ve made. She’s brought so much love into our home, and we’re incredibly grateful to Harties Feral Cat Rescue and Elsabe for bringing her into our lives.”
Katie may have been abandoned once, but she’ll never be alone again.
