Tristan’s Journey: From Fear to Trust

We met Tristan a year ago when we were asked to remove a female German Shepherd that was with him in a tiny 2m x 2m enclosure. The owner no longer wanted her as she was too old for breeding. Tristan he wanted to keep as he needed a dog to protect his yard – the yard being a small cement patch with no outside view. For a breed like this that needs activity and mental stimulation, it must have been total hell for Tristan; he was already turning circles to keep active.

We kept the pressure on to get him released and finally he was surrendered to us to rehome. Tristan was already mentally shutting down and the owner would take a sjambok with him when he dropped food into the pen as he now feared the dog.

We immediately reached out to Retreat 2 Eden as we knew they’d be the only team that could help Tristan be the dog he was meant to be. He’s an outstandingly gorgeous intelligent boy and the start of his life has been hell. When I see the incredible achievement Johan and Lynne have made with him in such a short time, I know that he’ll soon fit into a home that will love him and give him a life that’ll make the terror of his first few years a distant memory.

Alexandra Münch, volunteer at Retreat 2 Eden, shares...

When Tristan arrived at Retreat 2 Eden a few weeks ago, he was a shadow of a dog; terrified, aggressive and deeply scarred by past abuse. His eyes told a heart-breaking story of pain and betrayal. He’d lost all trust in humans.

The first step was giving him time. We allowed him to settle, to adjust to his new surroundings without pressure. Even in his nervous, overwhelmed state, we noticed a spark of interest – whenever he saw other dogs, something shifted in him. That was our key.

Rather than forcing interaction, we let Tristan observe from a safe distance. We opened the gate to the adjoining enclosure, where one of our pack of dogs played freely. We entered and interacted with the pack, playing and cuddling them, making sure Tristan could witness the joy of companionship without any expectations placed on him. Slowly, his curiosity grew. He edged closer, watching intently, as if contemplating whether he, too, could be part of this world.

One of the most critical lessons in rehabilitating traumatised dogs is patience. They must take the first step. And Tristan did. As the days passed, he inched closer, observing and eventually joining. The once fearful, aggressive dog now sought connection – not just with the other dogs but also with us. His progress continued as we introduced him to daily walks. At first, he hesitated, unsure of this new experience. But with gentle encouragement and the comfort of the pack beside him, Tristan started to explore the world outside his past trauma. Slowly, he began to trust. One step, one wag, one moment at a time.

Today, Tristan’s still on his journey and it will still take some time until he's ready for his forever home, but he’s no longer the broken soul who arrived at Retreat 2 Eden. He’s learning that humans can be kind, that love exists, and that he’s safe. His transformation reminds us why we do what we do – because every dog, no matter how broken, deserves a chance to heal. And all it takes is time, patience and the unwavering support of those who never give up.
