Dolly was a special little dog. That’s what her owner always told her, and so did her doggo friend, Willy, even if it wasn’t in words. But, one day, Dolly ran away. Something spooked her and she bolted at Sunrise Circle, Muizenberg, where the sun’s supposed to rise and make everything better.
Then she vanished for weeks. Maybe she scavenged scraps from the trail; maybe she became a hunter; maybe she went days and days without eating; and maybe she grew exhausted. But one day, Dolly peeked out from the mountains. A passer-by spotted her behind the rocks entire suburbs from home.
Out came the rescue workers, out came her owner, and out came volunteers to try and take her home.
But life is scary when you’re a tiny dog all by yourself, so she ran. Still, that moment became the one that mattered most, because now there was a photograph and a location. All the people in the community seemed to fall in love with her at the same time, so they began searching the mountain, hoping that Dolly would show herself.
She didn’t.
Dolly didn’t know it, but she’d become a tiny celebrity. Everyone learned about her. They spotted her in Fish Hoek. And in Kalk Bay. And even on Chapman’s Peak. She was so terrified she simply ran and ran, back and forth and back and forth, over the same mountain.
Dolly must have run ten kilometres in just one day, her fear chasing her with its huge yellow teeth. The fear got into everything. It even got into her, so when people tried to save her, the fear got into them, too. All of it was sharp and shivery, so she didn’t yet have the strength to overcome it.
But, eventually, the entire community was hoping and planning and searching. Drones went flying and walkers left food. Welfare teams went out at night. Her owner was there, too, of course, every single day, but the fear got into them all, and it was the only thing Dolly could see.
So she kept running.
But love ran faster. It bounced all over the mountain in huge, glowing bubbles.
Dolly gathered all the love, one bubble at a time – from the welfare workers, the volunteers, the ones leaving food in the mountains. It all floated over the rocks, and Dolly collected it until she was full. The next day, she woke up and thought, “I think I have enough love to make it home now.”
So off she ran. She ran through Kalk Bay and through Fish Hoek. She ran over the rocks and under the trees until she reached Sunrise Circle – the place where she’d gone missing.
And then she saw her owner as though he’d been sitting at that street in the rain every day for weeks.
And she saw that the sun had indeed risen right there, just like they said it would.
Patrick Daintree, father of Desiree Walters, Dolly’s owner, shares...
Dolly is a special little doggy who previously had two homes before mine – guess my house felt like home. She chose our home! She’s a very shy doggy, but very alert when it comes to me.
Dolly loves taking afternoon naps on my lap or bed with me, and enjoys long strolls on the beach and vlei. Since she’s back from her little journey, she’s become very attached to me and doesn’t leave my sight. She’s a very joyful and brave little dog and I love her to bits.
