Valhalla Park is a severely impoverished neighbourhood struggling with high levels of crime and gangsterism, not far from the bright lights of Cape Town International Airport. The people of this area struggle just to keep their heads above water; the thousands of animals that call it home face daily hardships, neglect, and abuse. Due to the high violence levels, established animal welfare organisations couldn’t even service this community.
That’s where V-PAW comes in. This local volunteer organisation provides primary animal healthcare to the struggling community of Valhalla Park and surrounds.
Risen from fire
Just before Christmas of 2013, a devastating fire ripped through the informal settlement of Agstelaan in the Valhalla Park area, destroying over 300 homes and leaving at least 1,400 people – and untold numbers of animals – hurt and homeless.
V-PAW was established after the fire. It was only as a result of the blaze that many got to hear about this community and the needs of the animals. We formalised an NPO and continue to provide support and care to the animals.
Valhalla Park Animal Welfare works in a community that was sadly overlooked for years. But not anymore, thanks to our volunteers and supporters.
Focus on primary care
Our primary focus is on sterilisation (mass sterilisation campaigns are held within the community), education on animal health, and providing primary medical care to animals in this community.
To date, we’re proud to have sterilised in excess of 3,500 animals. This was only possible due to the teamwork and dedication of the members of the group, all of whom give their time and dedication for no pay.
Our mission is to have a healthy animal population, educated pet owners, and to reduce the number of unwanted litters.
Community Champions
V-PAW believes in working with members of the community to be our “eyes and ears”. We aim to provide skills and support to empower them to make a difference. They’re the “first responders”, and we name them the Community Champions.
During lockdown, the V-PAW Community Champions have been monitoring the area’s animals, ensuring they’re fed (especially important with so many job losses), and identifying cases needing veterinary care.
We believe in strengthening positive, compassionate relationships between animals and humans through encouraging responsible pet ownership.
Our canine team member, Beertjie, helps with education. He grew up in Valhalla Park and we watched him grow from scared pup to calm, relaxed, super-friendly dog. After an accident in which his leg was injured, he’s gone to stay with one of our team members but is still an important part of the team.

V-PAW Activities
Some of the many things that V-PAW does include:
- basic medical care, including deworming and dipping (parasite control)
- subsidised vaccination (subject to sterilisation)
- subsidised feeding
- emergency response in the event of accidents or fights
- educational talks and literature provided
- training to individuals identified as community champions (to act as point of contact when we’re not in the community)
